Another chapter in the F1 spying saga November 13, 2007

Renault refuted allegations of spying claiming there was no data from McLaren in their vehicles. McLaren has been the subject of a record $100 million fine this year, as well as being stripped of their constructors championship points, for being in possession of Ferrari information.

The team has been summoned to appear before the governing body in Monaco on the 6th of December 6 and claim that a former McLaren employee had been suspended shortly after joining Renault last year and as soon as it became apparent that he may have been in possession of sensitive McLaren technical data.

The employee, an engineer, has been named as Phil Mackereth and Renault were apparently made aware of the problem a matter of days before the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The team claim the information was “contained on old-style floppy discs and included copies of some McLaren engineering drawings and some technical spreadsheets” and was “without the knowledge of anyone in authority in the team.”

Lewis Hamilton reveals the tensions with Fernando Alonso November 2, 2007

Lewis Hamilton has revealed how he disobeyed team orders at the Monaco Grand Prix and has outlined his deteriorating relationship with team-mate Fernando Alonso during the 2007 Formula One season.

At the Monaco Grand Prix in May Hamilton chased down Alonso from second place, despite team orders to ease off.

“In the race I felt he was pulling away and I wanted to keep pushing,” Hamilton said.

“‘Back off five seconds for Fernando,’ the team said. ‘I want to win this race. It’s not over till I see a flag,’ I replied. ‘No, keep the gap to five seconds,’ they said.

“But I said: ‘I’m not here to finish second’.”

2007’s Brazilian Grand Prix marked the finale of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes partnership’s first season. The partnership was introduced in spectacular style at the team’s launch in Valencia on the 15th January 2007 and since then has been very successful.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes has won eight races this season, with wins for Fernando Alonso at the Monaco Grand Prix, Malaysia, Italy and the European Grand Prix and a first Grand Prix win for Lewis Hamilton in Canada with subsequent wins at the US Grand Prix, Hungary and Japan. Some would argue there would have been a win for Hamilton at the Monaco Grand Prix also if team orders hadn’t prevented him from competing with Alonso. But with Monaco’s lack of overtaking opportunities this may never have been on the cards – let us know what you think, would Lewis Hamilton have been able to overtake Fernando Alonso at the Monaco GP?

OK so onto the numbers…

50% of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’ eight wins have been one-two victories and the drivers have accumulated eight pole positions between them with 5,340 racing kilometres between them in the 2007 season, 2,410kms of which have been whilst leading a race. During their podium celebrations there have been 24 champagne corks popped.

Between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso they have used six chassis, achieved five fastest laps and scored 218 points (more than any other combination of drivers) in the 2007 Formula 1 World Championship.

Let us know what you think – post a comment.

“I want to win on the track” – LH October 23, 2007

It transpires that a couple of nights ago after the Brazilian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton informed his McLaren bosse that he does not want to win his first world championship by appealing against the stewards’ decision not to penalise Williams and BMW over fuel irregularities. This comes after McLaren put their faith in the Formula One rule book which some would say has been used against them plenty this year and should now work in their favour if there has been a transgression.

In a surprising twist Hamilton found himself agreeing with Alonso, who believes that a championship won in a court room was not worth having. Hamilton also stated ”It would feel weird after Kimi did such a fantastic job in the last few races. It is not the way to do it, not good for the sport. It’s over.”

The basis of McLaren’s appeal, served on the FIA within an hour of the stewards’ ruling, is that whilst they [McLaren] accept the legitimacy of Ferrari’s one-two win at Interlagos, they do not accept the positions achieved by the fourth, fifth and sixth place finishes of Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. McLaren claim Williams’ and BMW were unfairly advantaged by colder fuel temperatures than were permitted. This would have allowed for faster pit stops and would have given a boost in power to the cars.

The champion must be confirmed by 15th November 2007 which means the appeal will be heard and settled by then and even if the FIA decide to penalise the Williams and BMW drivers there is no obligation to promote Hamilton.

Well that’s 2007 out of the way, commiserations to Lewis Hamilton but well done to Kimi, what a result for him.

Whatever the outcome of McLaren’s appeal (see our RSS feeds on the right of this page for further details from Grandprix.com, BBC News, etc.) it has been an incredible season, the rookie, the in-fighting, the spy scandal, the record fine – it could have come straight from an Ian Fleming novel.

There have also been some incredible drives by others which haven’t had the press coverage they should have or might have done if there wasn’t so much attention on Lewis… 2008 is set to be a stormer, and possibly Lewis Hamilton’s year for a world championship!
