RedBull’s David Coulthard is excited (almost!) about another demanding circuit in 2008.

‘I haven’t yet seen the Singapore track although I have seen the map of the proposed layout and it looks interesting. In the past we had quite a few street circuits, but recently Monaco has been the only one. In 2008, we will have three on the calendar, with Valencia also hosting a street race.’ ‘I always like visiting somewhere new and learning a new track and the fact this will be the first ever Formula One night race means it will be particularly special and memorable’

Coulthard thinks that ‘by definition, all street circuits are demanding, not technically, as average speeds are usually not so fast, but they all demand maximum concentration all the time, as kerbs and barriers are very near the edge of the track.

Asked what he felt was the most challenging circuit DC responded ‘Monaco is the most demanding circuit we race on so far, for the reasons I have described: The barriers are very close and the slightest mistake is severely punished, whereas at a normal circuit you can spin off into a gravel trap or a tarmac escape road and get going again. The tight and twisty nature means it is physically demanding too.’

Coulthard’s RedBull team mate Mark Webber comments ‘it’s always difficult to guesstimate how tough a circuit will be on paper so obviously I’ll have a greater impression after I’ve driven it. ‘But, unquestionably it’s going to be very unique racing under lights.’

Webber also considers Monaco the toughest circuit ‘Monaco because in terms of safety and design, it is very old in its layout which means very, very minimal room for error which I like as it provides us with the greatest test and challenge,’.

‘It’s always exciting to race at brand new venues and to have a new race which is also a street circuit and at night makes it an even greater thrill.

‘I’m a big fan of street circuits as they are far more punishing than most purpose-built tracks so if a driver gets it wrong and makes a mistake out on the track, there’s usually a big price to pay for it,’ says the Australian.
