The tensions of the 2007 season within the camp at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes have culminated in Fernando Alonso’s announcement that he will leave the team after one year into a three year contract.

A number of teams are rumoured to be seeking to secure Alonso’s skills, most likely being Renault the team he left after winning the 2005 and 2006 world driving championships, there is also a wild card element, Red Bull with perhaps a package that would include Ross Brawn, who has been on a year’s sabbatical from racing this year, and is the masterminded behind Ferrari’s and Michael Schumacher’s rise to F1 domination in the ’90s.

2007 was marred by conflict and strife within the McLaren team including tension at the Monaco Grand Prix when Lewis Hamilton was instructed to back off from Alonso and not compete for the win. Hamilton’s new running mate at McLaren for 2008 has yet to be announced.
